In the late 1990s I created a website for my Dad who was an actor, writer and director. As well as a media instructor. To promote him as a voice talent and gain students for his different classes. The early days of using Yahoo site builder eventually lead to a poor man’s Frontpage called Namo. Then in the early 2000s a friend of ours taught me about WordPress.
I have a collection of old and newer websites that I have worked on over the years. Most of them were professional websites, for our various creative projects or services. I even helped others with their websites over the years.
For a while I had a personal website for fun. It was a Sailor Moon themed/poetry site. Unfortunately I lost the domain and for years hadn’t been able to get to back. See my Sailor Dove blog post for details. Still have the back up file and HTML pages.
In December 2025, after Christmas, I discovered the Indie Web. And that has been an engaging rabbit trail. Most of my websites were for work and volunteer projects.
But Indie Web is about encouraging folks to create their own personal websites. There’s other articles talking about the details and everything. I really was reinvigorated to add more personal content to my website. Bringing back the fun and enjoyment of my SailorDove.com days.
May dust off these poems in the old HTML and add them here.
My Dad gave me wise advice. He told me to get my name as a domain, to have and keep for whatever I wanted to do with it. He was concerned for my sake that it could be used for a porn star. My name is not common, but not uncommon. If I didn’t get it, someone else would snatch it up. I really appreciated Dad’s sound advice. He helped me buy my domain.
I never kept a log or anything of what ValerieFlynn.com was. But I did eventually renovate from Namo to WordPress. I don’t remember when. I have vague memories of having essential oil classes on it.
In February 2026, I added slash pages to my current WordPress site. I have ideas peculating of future additions to my website.
At the time of this writing, I’m trying to figure out how to clean up my menu to be easier to scan and still have everything accessible. I did figure it out before posting this blog post.
In the process of combining a profile website with fun personal flavor to the site isn’t easy. But, I like the ability and freedom to do what I want to with my own website.
