This podcast is about learning about learners, where we share our learning journeys. Sometimes it will include good faith dialogue in the spirit of Intellectual Hospitality.
It’s a mix of short monologues and interviews with regular folks and people of renown.
The topics may include:
- writing
- marketing
- history
- essential oils
- health / care-giving
- living with disabilities and chronic health conditions
- emergency preparedness
- community
- self directed learning.
Even though Miss Flynn may have conversations with academic guests, the focus will be on personal enrichment for self learners, creative professionals and history re-enactors/ enthusiasts.
Nara is a word that has many meanings around the world. It was chosen for its Japanese meaning of “oak”. It also implies connotations of “wisdom” and “spirituality”.

Sample Questions
To give you an idea, here are some questions that will probably be asked during the interview. Some other questions might be asked during the flow of conversation. If you do teaching or mentoring, I’d also like to get your perspective on that as well.
- What was your learning journey?
- What are your learning pursuits, (personally, professionally)?
- What have you learned that gives you meaning?
- Do you prefer self study or classes more? Or is it a mix for you?
- What challenges do you need to overcome? What’s holding you back?
- What internal and external problems do you face?
- What problems have you dealt with successfully? How did you solve them?
- What are some resources, types of tools or things you found that are helpful?
- What have you learned that you found helpful?
- Do you have any last thoughts or words of encouragements for other learners?
Some interviewees had a challenge with the first question regarding one’s learning journey. It can be a summery of your academic journey, when and why you started your self learning journey, or a mix of both. One guest answered the question with a few memories that the question brought to mind. There’s no pressure to answer it. We can easily switch to an alternative “Learning Styles” question instead.
Other Interview Topics
If we are going to talk about something other than learning, Let me know if you’re comfortable with it being a spontaneous conversation or if some questions in advance would help.
